Arts for Justice:
Across Uganda and the broader East African region, the fundamental rights to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, and non-discrimination are under sustained attack Artists are silenced, and entire communities live in fear of retaliation for simply speaking their truth. This is part of a systemic erosion of civic space.
Uganda, with over 78% of its population under age 30, faces a paradox: a youthful, creative generation silenced by restrictive laws like the These laws criminalize artistic expression, and foster a culture of fear and silence. Globally, the UNESCO 2023 Global Report noted a 23% rise in cultural censorship. Yet art remains one of the most powerful forms of resistance unfiltered, unbowed, and fiercely human. When artists take to the streets with brushes, music, and performance, they do more than create they defend.
We are leveraging artistic expression as a frontline tool for activism and human rights education. built on three pillars: Creative Expression, Community Engagement, and Accountability through Art. Community Outreach Through art workshops, creative writing circles, and open mic sessions, we engage local communities and grassroots artists in safe, inclusive spaces. Advocacy & Awareness, We collaborate with activists, organizations, and policy-makers to use art as an advocacy tool. Through forums, public art actions, and panel discussions, we raise awareness of pressing human rights issues and push for policy reform grounded in inclusion and justice. Artist Development We support emerging and established artists with access to residencies, grants, mentorship, and professional guidance. By nurturing talent and amplifying their work, we help break barriers and support sustainable creative careers.
